Mark's list of surplus vendors

Name brands are not better. In fact, they are usually worse. The name brand companies tend to use proprietary motherboard form factors. To replace your motherboards (in order to upgrade the processor) you have to replace the case as well.

I just recently started a page on computer history links which may be useful to those considering a used machine.

• JEM Computers. I have done thousands of dollars worth of business with these folks. They are generally reasonable to deal with. Right now their inventory largely consists of HP netservers, unfortunately.
• Surplus Direct These folks are large but a bit shady. Do not beleive the "Due in xx/xx" status for items on their web page. These dates are just incremented by one week every week. I ordered from them once. First, they had some free windows piece of crap software that I could not delete from the order form, then they shipped me the piece of crap software without the item I had actually ordered which was listed as "cancelled at customer request". I didn't pay anything (except for trash removal fees).
• Damark. Damark has an interesting paper catalog. Unfortunately, their on-line site has very little to offer.
• tredex. They used to offer interesting deals. Lately, their inventory has been pretty boring.
• Herbach and Raderman (H&R). Electrical and Mechanical stuff.
• American Computer Exchange. A broker for individuals buying and selling computers with stock market like statistics.
• Computer Resources Network, Inc.
• ____
• Amitron
• Analog Technolyg Center, Inc. sells refurbished monitors. They have a number of pages of monitor specs and links to others.
• Surplus Computer Store, Ontario. Prices in canadian funds. Cheap 386 motherboards.
• Corporate Systems Center has some cheap prices on small refurbished hard drives.
• NEI Computers
• The folks at Just a Sec actually are so clueless as to post their pricelist in microsoft excel format only.
• PCused (PC's) and CPused (Mac's)

• Philips Warehouse Sales, ruckersville. They don't have a web page that I know of but their sister company Philips Communications and Equipment does (See below).
• Phillips Communications & Equipmentsells new and used telecom hardware.
• Bob Erb, who I met at St. Maarten's, runs a little outfit called PC Works out of his house in Louisa. He sells 8088 machines for $75, 286 through 686 machines for more.
• The Computer Shack is also in louisa and sells used machines.
• There is a regional paper specializing in classified ads called the blue ridge buck saver which has a online presence through www.trader.com (deliberately not hyperlinked) which I found so offensive for its use of frames, invasion of privacy and inconvenience by making you fill out a questionnaire and remember a login/password (of their choice even) merely to browse adds, and charging you for information of negligible value rather than just running a few banner ads that I recommend avoiding this site.
