Symbol LS7000 bar code reader with Linux

A friend gave me some old bar code readers.

Symbol is absolutely terrible about putting any useful information at all on their web site.

Actually, I did the initial tests on a Solaris box, just because it was handy and had a free serial port. A null modem was used. The information here should be useful for other Unix(tm) compatible systems as well as other operating systems.

Jumper P2 belongs in position nearest P1.

Bar code formats seem to include UPC, EAN, Code 39, codabar, code 128, code 93, code 39, and 2 of 5.

I received 4 "LS7000 II" laser scanners and two "LL 320" rs-232 output decoder wedges, with no documentation. LL-320-I01AA s/n 005325, oct 1987 12V, 1A (data only) LL-320-I00-A s/n 0097, oct 1987 12V, 1A (giberish+data)

While scanning, one wedge unit seems to transmit giberish on the RS-232 line. The bar code itself will usually appear as a continuous sequence of digits at the end of the line.

The other wedge transmits just the bar code, without the junk.
