A Brief Autobiography of the Whitises In 1771 Daniel Rogan sailed from Dublin, Ireland He met and married Catherine Crawford in 1779. They had 11 children. 8 boys and 3 girls. Griffith Rogan was the third child of that marriage. Griffith Rogan married Mary Smith and they had seven children. One of these children, named Florance Rogan, married Charles Wesley Whitis (Ruf's Grandfather) who was born in 1828. Charles Wesley Whitis arrived in Lockhart Texas in 1854. Civic leader, banker, business leader in Austin, Texas. Charles and Florence had eleven children (some of whom died) and one of whom was named Charles Wesley Whitis (Junior-altho they didn't refer to him as such) married Frances Fallowell Robinson. There is very little on record of Ruf's Mother's heritage. She would not talk about it, but her parent's were either lost in the Galveston Flood, at too young an age for her to remember, or very poor, anyway she was adopted by a Mr. Robinson and his wife, who was the Post- master of Dallas, Texas. They visited once when Ruf was a boy in White Plains, N.Y. and Ruf has memories of a "typical Southern Gentleman with a big white moustache who gave him a white dog, (Spitz, named Tex) and a lot of rattlesnake skins he decorated his room with." Since our one visit to Ausin, where we knwe the Whitis papers were in some library-but could not find the right one- we obtained the list from Ruf's sister. I hope one day to see it for myself and also hope that you will. Also take a walk down "Whitis Ave" and the best part they KNOW HOW TO PRONOUNCE WHITIS!!!! Enjoy!
