[GEN0024] Rufus R. Whitis Born June 7, 1907 in White Plains, N.Y. Went through High School in Pleasanville, N.Y. where he was Captain of the football team and the Baseball team. In 1928 he went to work for W.R. Grace & Co in their Nitrate Department. When the stock market crash came Grace & Co. did away with the whole Department. Then Rufus started helping out his Dad who was a Municipal Bond Broker We were married in 1932 and over the years we had five sones. We came to Florida from Duxbury, Mass. He had been in business for himself. In 1954 Dr Nance was President of the Univerity of Tampa. He offered Rufus the position of Director of Maintenanc. Which he handled well, enjoying the challenges and especially the students to whom he was a friend. In 1961 the students dedicated their Year book, The Moroccan to him. Then Dr. Delo became President and Rufus became Director Of Personell. WDAE gave him a certificate of Businessman of the Day. Rufus retired from the University of Tampa in 1972 with a Proclamation that it be known as "Rufus Whitis Day" in appreciation for nineteen years of dedicated service.
