Home page for Whitis clan geneology information
Also featuring Whitehurst genealogy prior to about 1828; see the mailing
list archive and my family tree in GEDCOM file or GED2HTML format.
This page is maintained by Mark Rogan Whitis (whitis@freelabs.com).
The Whitis name
The Whitis name is very uncommon. A search of all of the phone books
in the country which I did a couple years ago yielded only 345 listings.
I calculate from that that there are approximately 1200 people with the
surname "Whitis" (including hyphenated varieties) in this country, or
less than one person out of every 200,000 (0.0005%). It is the
13878th most common name in the country (based on the best publicly
availible information). US census data appears to corroborate this estimate
(within the limited precision of that data).
The "Whitis" name apperently derived from a misspelling of "Whitehurst".
Everyone named "Whitis" in this country is probably descended
from William Whitehurst who came to this country in 1636.
Mark Rogan Whitis's Genealogy Home Page
I have moved some of the content of this page, particularly that which
is related to other surnames or to genealogy in general to
Mark Rogan Whitis's Genalogy Home Page.
Mailing List
I have created two Email mailing lists for people interested in
sharing infomation on the Whitis name or geneology. The addresses
to use in connection with these lists are:
- whitis-clan@dbd.com:
Send to this address to send mail to all of the subscribers of the list.
You do not have to join the list to post to it, although you should
tell people if you are not on the list so they can respond to you
directly and check the archive before and after.
- whitis-clan-request@dbd.com
: Send administrative requests (such as requests to be added or deleted
from the list) to this address.
- whitis-clan-archive@dbd.com:
This address sends directly to the mailing list archive without sending
a copy to all of the subscribers. This can be used to archive
some information without filling everyones mailboxes. Do not send
HUGE messages to this address - instead make other arrangements with
me for file transfer.

Whitis/Whitehurst connection
Ava Ann Wilson Whitis's Message of 31 May 1996
traces the whitis name back to whitehurst.
NOTE: that there appears to be an error between Simon Whitehurst and Richard Whitehurst, since it appears that a couple generations have been skipped.
This error is in the original email message (check the archive) from which
I took this information.
Some of my own personal geneological information
I have the original copies of a number of geneological documents pertaining
to the Whitis side of my family.
Other peoples information
Snake oil
I have received various advertisements in the mail for companies
claiming to offer "Whitis Genealogy" information.
These generally offer much less information than you can get on the
Internet (even without these pages).
The advertisements range from intentionally misleading to downright
fraudulent. What you really get is a list of names out of the
phone book (the same list they used to send out these mailings),
Social Security Death Master File, and a few other databases of
little significance. If you are totally computer illiterate
and have no internet access then these publications might have
some marginal use.
I actually ordered one of these; it was as bad as I expected.
That one was "Three Centuries of Whitis", 7335 E Orchard Rd #400D,
Englewood, CO 80111, 303-771-6818.
The latest advertisement I received was from
"The Whitis Archives", 250 Coolidge St, Midvale, UT 84047-3829,
apparently publlished by Mountain West News 801-255-4238, 888-751-NEWS.
This one claims to have a few more databases than the three centuries
one.
If you can't find what you are looking for
- Did you browse the patrilineal path in my family tree?
- Did you read Ava's message of 31 May 1996? (now linked separately)
- Did you read and/or search (using your browsers built in string search)
the rest of the mailing list archive? It is a breach of Netiquette to
send a message to a mailing list, or the lists owner, without checking
the archive first.
- Use your favorite search engine to search this web site.
In altavista's advanced search, for example, you can use
the search keyword "url:http://www.freelabs.com/~whitis/clan/" to
confine your search to this site. Be warned, however, your search
engine may very well skip the mailing list archive and the text versions of
the source documents since these are not html files.
- Send email to the whitis-clan list
- DO NOT TELEPHONE ME. You are likely to disturb my sleep, I
might have better things to do at that moment, and I probably won't
even be in the same location as the records. If you have a question
send me email directly or via the list.
If you did find what you were looking for
Please let me know via email.
If possible, try to contribute something back.
Contributions Welcome
- your family tree may be useful to others who lack the information to
tie themselves back to Thomas and Elizibeth whitis/whitehurst.
- You might have dates and places of birth/date/marriage, biographies,
birth certificates, or other information/documents which would be of interest.
- You could volunteer to be a contact point for people who do not
have internet access.
- You might be geographically located near sources of information
which would be prohibitively expensive for most of us to retrieve.
Particularly if you are located near Somerset, Kentucky or Austin, Texas.
For example, I know there is (or was) an entire box of whitis records at the
Austin Public Library which cover the texas branch of the clan. I would
appreciate scans or copies of those documents.
- Copies of rare books are welcome.
- There is information in the mailing list archive which has not
been made availible in GEDCOM format; someone could convert that.
- Cash, hard drives, etc.
