Mark Rogan Whitis's Genealogy Home Page
This page is the master index for various pages devoted to various
surnames. I have a several hundred genealogy pages within this tree.
Search
A bug in pinpoint prevents it from searching the mailing
list archive, so check
there as well.
My family tree
With over 300 individual web pages in my personal genealogy site
tracing many lines back 10-14 generations, it can get a bit bewildering.
My own family tree showing my direct ancestors is an important roadmap
if you are concerned about the relationship between me and any of
my ancestors. It is intended to be printed out and used as an
aid while you are navigating this site. It goes back a
dozen generations or so. There is a lot of small print so
it should be printed on a printer which supports at least 300dpi.
It is availible in three forms:
- Postscipt (Original)
- GIF image. This is a 2400x3200 2 color (1 bit/pixel)
compressed gif which is about 70K.
- PDF
Postscript(TM) is a page description language used by most decent
laser printers.
The GIF and PDF files may not always be as up to date as the postscript file.
If you have a postscript printer, you can usually send the postscript file
to it directly although if you are in the bizarre Macintosh world you will
need a special utility to send the file to the printer unadulterated.
The GIF and PDF files are generated from the postscript file using
Alladin Ghostscript, an
interpreter for the Ghostscript language (virtually identical to
Adobe Postscript (TM)) which runs on
Linux, *BSD, and other Un*x compatible operating systems as well
as under DOS, Windows, OS/2, Vax/VMS, MacOS, and others. If your
computer can run a graphical browser, it can probably run Ghostscript.
Ghostscript is free for personal use and even some commercial uses.
Ghostscript, and related programs, will let you view, print, or
create images or pdf files from Postscript files. You can
display the PDF files with xpdf, ghostscript, or Adobe> Acrobat Reader, all of which are generally
availible free of charge.
In addition, my family tree is availible as a couple hundred linked
hypertext pages, one per individual, including
me.
Although the page for each individual shows them in a context of
five generations (from their children to their great grand parents),
it can still be difficult to connect individuals when they
can be separated by a dozen generations.
Most of my source documents are online as both raw images and
(manually transcribed) text files. The text files are much easier
to read and search and many are annotated.
Surnames
Whitis/Whitehurst
My Whitis/Whitehurst page.
Traced back 10 Generations to Wlliam Whitehurst
who was born in the late 1500's. All Whitises are related
within a half dozen generations and share a common immigrant ancestor.
Elyea/Alyea/Aliee/D'Ailly
My Elyea/Alyea/Aliee/D'Ailly/Elya page.
I have created a new page for the Elyea clan.
Traced back 10 generations to
Nicholas D'Ailly who was born in the early 1600's.
Rogan
My Rogan page.
Traced back 6 generations to 1791 irish immigrant Daniel Rogan.
Burton
Traced back 11 Generations to John Burton (1607-1684).
Roome
Traced back 9 generations to Peter Wellemse Roome (married 26 Nov 1684).
Now 10 generations to Willem (William) Jansen Roome and Janettje Jans,
thanks to Tomcat's page.
This line came from the Netherlands. There is an non-specific but widespread
(over many distant brances of the Roome family) oral tradition that this line
came from French Hugenots. I have encountered similar claims in
My own genealogy (made by my great great grandmother, regarding
the ancestry of her husband (Charles Wesley Whitis(I)), though not
from the Roome line.
Tomcat (Tom (roome) Wood) has a considerable amount of information on the
Roome Family.
He has sent me some information recently which suggests that the
Roome name might have started with Willem Jansen a.k.a. Willem
Jansen Roome; he was listed on the 1659(?) manifest of the ship "de Moesman"
without the "Roome". So where the "Roome" came from or why it was
omitted is at the moment a mystery.
Bogardus
My Bogardus/Jans page.
Keith
I am looking for information on ancestors of Julia Keith and linking her to
her cousin Minor Cooper Keith.
Traced back 5 generations to Minor Hubbel Keith.
I have written
a history
of my indirect ancestor Minor C Keith, bananas,
railroads, Central America and the institutions he founded: United Fruit
Company (Chiquita) and the International Railways of Central America (IRCA).
Meigs
Related to the keith line.
Morse
Traced back 11 generations to Anthony Morse who died 12 Oct 1686.
Morris
Interested in ancestors of Frank Morris and Violet Viola Kelemen.
VanVoorhees
Vangelder
Castro
I don't know of any relation to Fidel but the cousin of one of my
direct ancestors married the daugher of the President of Costa Rica
so I am related to some of the Castro's there.
Crawford
Catherine Crawford was the wife of Daniel Rogan, who immigrated to
the US in 1771.
McWilliams
My sister married a McWilliams.
Le ROUX
Smith
Berry
Jans/Jansen
I am supposedly related, possibly as a direct descendant, to the well
known Anneke Jans through the
Bogardus line
but the link has only been established through some vauge statements.
Also, I am directly descended from Jannetje Jans, mother of
Peter Wellemse Roome.
Carnell
Harrison
Spear
Secor
Cox
Argent Cox married Simon Whitehurst (b. circa 1730).
Nicholas
Margaret Nicholas married Richard Whitehurst (1636-1705).
Russel
Ellen Russel (died 1634) married Willam Richard Whitehurst.
Some sorces of general geneological information
Why?
Personally, I am not that big on family ties and I do not try to justify
my own existance on some status attained by some ancestor I never
even met as some people do. However, Whitis is an unusual name
and I do get questions about it, including some from other
people on the net who share the name. Finally, someone happened
to ask the question at a time when I had something more important
to avoid doing so I did a little research. I found out that
the exploration itself could be interesting; it is something of
a mystery to be unravelled. So every once in a while, when time
permits, I dabble in geneology. I have also come to realize that
the information has a tendancy to disappear into the ether if
it is not maintained. I now have a niece and nephew who
may be interested in tracing their family tree at some point in
the future.
This page, and the associated mailing lists, were created in order
to facilitate using the internet to share information and resources
about the Whitis clan and other related lines.
